My thoughts on Luke 8:22

Luke 8:22-25 “One day he got into a boat with his disciples and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying “Master, Master we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “When then is this, that he commands even winds and water and they obey Him?”

I love this passage because to me it shows our weakness and Jesus’ power and how through faith we can access his power in our weakness. They get on a boat, Jesus falls asleep, the disciples freak out and wake him up because they think they're about to die. What does Jesus do? He calms the storm. The same God who made the raging waters calm has given us access to His power through the Holy Spirit. I don't think its a coincidence that just verses before Luke says “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.” Why as Christians with the Holy Spirit inside of us do we shove him under the bed or cover his power with a jar? Why when we can be Spirit-filled with some wave-calming power do we hide from the world?

On another note, I thought it was interesting that Jesus was the one that suggested to get in the boat in the first place. Isn't it fair to say that when the Father calls us to something He will pull us through?

Application: Today I will boldly pray for someone struggling with something knowing that the power inside me is the same power that Jesus used to calm the waves and truly believing that He will meet that need.
